Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez-Is It a Win or WTF?

Selena Gomez is among the celebrities who recently entered the beauty industry.

In February 2020—about a month before the world took a very sharp turn and spiraled downward—the amazing singer announced that she was finally stepping into the beauty world with a special plan of her own. Now we know that it was the Rare Beauty makeup line. A beauty line Gomez imagined, planned out, and carefully selected from the studs.

You might credit the brand's shattering success to the singer's star power or the aesthetically pleasing packaging, but there is no doubt that these instinctive products have been making a hit in the makeup industry for the simplest of reasons; they do exactly what they say they will.

Is this brand worth it?

Celebrity beauty brands have overturned celebrity fragrances since the 2020s. There have been so many celeb brands being released out into the world now, from Rihanna to Halsey. And thus, the entire beauty market has been flooded with famous faces, and it’s a bit overwhelming and a tad annoying. This leaves all of us pondering: Are any of these celeb-backed brands even worth the splurge? Or, to put it more specifically, is Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez worth all the buzz it has created?

Let's find out!

  • Always an Optimist Illuminating Primer

Even the name radiates a positive vibe!

This $26 water-based primer is said to hydrate, smooth, and illuminate the skin without being too sticky. It is also said to be made without silicones. Which is a great thing as silicone can clog the skin pores and cause breakouts.

According to online, the product feels as if it has been infused with super-fine pearls that give it a finishing glow. The product provides the skin with an iridescent sheen and creates a tacky — but non-sticky — base for makeup. It reminds me of Urban Decay’s All-Nighter Primer, and that’s a good thing!

  • Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation

This product is available in 48 different shades. It has become one of the most diversified shade ranges on the market, passing even Rihanna's Fenty 40!

This foundation's consistency is similar to that of serum or even a face oil, remarkably without compromising the color. Initially, the brand created a foundation brush as a part of its primary launch, but this foundation is super easy to apply even with only your fingers.

As far as coverage is concerned, this foundation is very customizable. Just dab on a few dots for a result comparable to a BB cream-like, or build your coverage up. The formula genuinely feels weightless. And as for packaging, the design is minimalist and gorgeous, and the features are even more impressive.

  • Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer

At $19 per bottle, the Liquid Touch Brightening concealer is said to hide any dark circles, blemishes, fine lines and redness, without caking or creasing. Like the Rare Beauty's foundation, it is meant to provide medium, buildable coverage. It’s actually pretty, pretty good.

  • Lip Souffle Matte Lip Cream

Lip Soufflé goes on smooth as butter and somehow dries down to a matte with the perfect amount of gloss. Keep in mind to give the formula sufficient time to dry. It will last through almost anything!

  • Soft Pinch Liquid Blush

Soft Pinch blends with the skin like melted butter, which means it is effectively foolproof.

If you want to apply like Selena Gomez, swirl the tiniest bit of the liquid blush onto the apples of your cheeks, and pull the blush upward then outward into your hairline.

The product is competently named, as it gives you the most natural flush you can get, almost as if your mother or grandmother just gave you a tiny pinch on your cheek!

  • Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Liner

Where do we even start? This liner will make you want to learn how to perfect a cat-eye. Firstly, this liner is very light and extremely easy to hold, which gives you more precision and control.

Secondly, the liner's felt tip gives an ample amount of pigment without too much skipping or overflowing when lining, making the super careful process of lining your eyes so much simpler. And most of all, it stays on without smudging, fading or bleeding, throughout the day.

A Japanese calligraphy brush inspired the precision tip. Once you have perfected your cat-eye or wing, the liner will not smudge, smear, or fade in the slightest. You can wash your face with water, rub your eyes, or even keep wear it throughout your sweatiest workout.

Out of all the Rare Beauty makeup line products, this one is definitely worth the small investment.

  • With Gratitude Dewy Lip Balm

This product is a nourishing, hydrating balm with a buildable, light-to-medium quantity of color and a natural glistening finish. You can think of this balm as the perfect combination of your favorite non-sticky lip balm and your favorite lipstick.

  • Brow Harmony Pencil and Gel

This brow product has a pigmented gel pencil on one end and a spoolie brush on the other.

Because of the very narrow spoolie applicator, it is significantly easy to fill in the tails of your brows without smearing the gel on the skin surrounding the brows.

  • Always an Optimist 4-in-1 Mist

This Rare Beauty product primes, refreshes, sets, and hydrates your skin.

You can apply this product before makeup, between the makeup steps or after the makeup to give the matte products a glistening finish.

Always an Optimist Pore Diffusing Primer

Always an Optimist is functional as a setting spray or as a primer and positively lovely as a mid-day, hydrating mist. Just spray the mist on your face from about an arm's length—any closer, and the droplets won't have the time to dissolve into a haze, and you'll be left with a wet face.

  • Liquid Touch Multitasking Makeup Sponge

The sponge has a unique shape that ensures a precision tip for detailed work, four flat edges for blending, and a rounded bottom to soften and buff the harsh edges. Since the sponge is water-activated, be sure to run it under water or spray it with mist before you blend. This product is….meh. I’ve used better sponges before. Perhaps that’s why it is on deep, deep discount…

In conclusion, there's so much more to Gomez's Rare Beauty than most famous beauty brands have brought to the table. This is a brand I can and will take seriously. I look forward to what else she comes up with.

Sharing is caring!
