A Foolproof Way on How to Apply Eyeshadow for Your Eye Shape!!

One of the most challenging makeup techniques to master is eyeshadow. In order to achieve a flawless eye look, several elements are involved, which include selecting the right colors to understand to blend to perfection.

Another essential aspect to consider is your eye shape because when you know your eye shape, it can help you apply the makeup effectively. You can apply your friend’s eyeshadow look to your eyes, but because you don’t have the same shape it may not look good. You can copy the colors, but styles vary with each person.

Your bestie may have hooded eyes but you have round eyes. It will not look the same. Making the best of the eye shape can be as important as choosing the color, and therefore, the placement of shadows and liners can play an essential role in your eye shadow look.

Deep Set

Unlike the prominent eye shapes, with the deep-set eye shape, you have a deep socket with a balanced lid. It is better to avoid super dark colors in the crease as it will only be adding deepness to the socket, whereas it is better to add medium tones from the lid to the crease.

Because of deep-set eyes, your eyes may look smaller after applying eyeshadow. However, hopefully these ideas will help, along with a lot of practice.

For fun, let’s assume you will be using a nude-ish type palette. So first, prime your lids. This will make a base and colors will pop! Apply a nude or neutral shade in the contour of your eye (aka your eye socket) This is the hollow point that starts at the corner of your outer eye area, up to your brow bone. Next, apply a medium brownish color and blend, blend, blend!!! BLEND I SAY!!!

Now you want to add depth to your crease. Why? Because you are now adding dimension to your eyes. Use a darker brown shadow onto your crease and the outer corner. Don’t start off with a heavy hand. You can always build up color. Now if you want, you can add a pop of color or shimmer to the corners of your eyes or even dab some along the lid. Et voila!

Downturned Eyes

The downturned eye shape usually has a drooping type look toward the outer corner. Your goal when applying eyeshadow with this eye shape is to uplift the eye. In order to pull the eye up, the color of the liner you use should be drawn upward from the eye's outer corner. With a tip of a triangle sponge or liner tape, you can do it, whereas, after application, the sponge can be taken from the outer corner, and by swooping upward, you will notice an instant lift to your eye.

Downturned eyes should try for 3 or more colors…So using the pretend nude palette again, AFTER priming, apply the nude shade all over the lid, all the way up to the brow. Place a medium shade on to the lighter one, but from the lashes to right above your crease. Put your darkest color right on your crease, and then buff ever so lightly to make your outer corner look lifted. Then blend away lines…Lastly, try not to use black eyeliner. Because it’s so dark it will drag your eyes downward. Try brown or grey. Also, instead of lining your entire lid, try starting from the inner corner to a little more than halfway, but not to the outer corner. Lastly, highlighting your brow bone will give you a lifted look!

Round Eyes

The shape of the round eyes is quite similar to the almond eyes, but the eye is more pronounced in round eyes. Anything can be done to the lid or crease for this particular shape. With this eye shape, it is much better to avoid using any liner on the lower waterline, exaggerating the roundness.

If you absolutely want to put something on the lower lash line, make it a soft grey or taupe. You can use a bit of mascara on the lower lashes as well.

Always focus your most vivid or brightest color on the top lash line and the outer corners.

Almond Eyes

Almond eyes are the most balanced of the eye shapes, which means that the socket, lid, and brow bone are usually all proportioned. You can play with the color placement and wear any style with this particular shape. (Eye roll of jealousy)

To make your eyes stand out even more, add a pop of color or shimmer color to your inner corner of the tear duct area.

Hooded Eyes

The infamous hooded eyes are the ones when the creased skin falls over the lid and cover most of it. Yes, I have hooded eyes….Many people often try to minimize the hood by applying dark color in the crease, but in reality, it doesn't work because the hooded eyes don't have a pronounced crease. Plus you just made your eyes really, really tiny. Therefore, you have to “make” a new crease.

The face and eye balance can look best if a darker neutral color is applied on the lid to about a half-inch to the brow and smudge up. Then one can apply highlight on the frontal bone because adding highlight to the inner corner opens the eye. In the end, a lot of mascara can be used. Lighter colors on the lid will make your eyes look uneven. With this eye shape, practice makes perfect!!!

Upturned Eyes

The upturned eyes are literally the opposite of the downturned eyes, and therefore, for this particular shape, you need to avoid placing your liner that sweeps up and exaggerates the upturn. However, a classic cat eye to the “fox eye” trend looks fantastic on this eye shape in my opinion.

You can have a more balanced look by rounding out and bringing the outer corner of the eye. A dark shadow can be applied on the lower outer corner, and this can be very good to lower down the eyes and help to balance out the shape. Also, a natural eyeshadow look with darker shades helps create balance for this shape.

Monolid Eyes

I am not an expert on the monolid eye shape, but here are a few tips that I’ve read about that are highly recommended.

-Start with a primer, even on your lashes. Because monolids will smudge since the lid fold over the lash line, you want to make sure your eyeshadow will stay.

-Use waterproof eyeliner and if you can, tight-line your eyes as well. If you want to wing it out, use a gel that is smudge-proof, or again, use a liner that is waterproof. You can also fake wings so it doesn’t look too harsh, use eyeshadow to mimic that look.

-With a darker color, apply the shadow to the lash line and blend upwards.

-Try “wispy” style eyelashes. This way, they won’t look like the dreaded “fan” eye. LOL Because the monolid folds over, they usually hide half of the length of the lashes. Hence, the wispy style adds more depth to the eye.

-Lastly, blend the top of the eye and bottom-outer corners together. This will create a “V” and a very nice soft look.

Again, all of these are just suggestions. Your eye shape doesn’t dictate what makeup rules you should follow. Makeup has no rules, but does have a theory. Do want you want with your makeup and your eyes!!! Everyone has their own beauty so OWN IT!!!
