As crazy as it sounds, even professional makeup artists find it hard to put the lashes on correctly. Although the option of getting lash lifts or extensions does exist, it’s not only tedious, but it can also be expensive.

There are a ton of tutorials online that may give you the tips you need. However, instead of spending all that time looking them up, here is a comprehensive guide on how to master the application of false eyelashes!

The step-by-step guide

Step 1: Prep your natural lashes

The first step - as with any makeup application - is to prep your natural look. Before you put on the fake lashes, you need to complete your eyeshadow and make sure the eyeliner looks good. Next, curl your natural lashes, and apply the mascara of your choice. (edit: some people prefer to apply mascara after they have applied their lashes. It’s up to you) Now, you are all set for the actual process.

Step 2: Apply glue to the fake lash

A common mistake at this stage is to apply glue directly to the lash base. The actual process is slightly more sophisticated than that. First, get a pair of lash tweezers or regular tweezers to hold the lashes. Then, add a drop of glue to a toothpick or Q-tip, and use that to apply the glue to the lash base. This way, you don’t risk spilling more glue onto the lash than you actually want. There is NOTHING worse than seeing goopy glue dried on lashes!

The next step is to measure the strip of fake lash against your own eyelid and trim off the unnecessary area. Don’t throw the excess away, though - you can use it to stack upon the existing lash strip for an extra special touch of flair!

Step 3: Wait for the glue to dry

The key to the perfect fake eyelashes is not applying them as soon as you put glue on them. Wait for the glue to dry a bit - this will make it unlikely for the lashes to slip off your eyelid the second you attempt to apply them. However, make sure you don’t let it dry completely. Waiting for around half a minute is more than enough. As long as it is “tacky”, you are good to go.

Step 4: Attach the fake lash to your lash line

Using the same tweezers, adhere the strip of lashes to your own lash line, and press it into place. It’s difficult to attach the strip so that it doesn’t get tangled. The trick is to place a mirror under your face and look down. This way, you’ll be able to see precisely where you need to maneuver the strip.

Now, the hardest part is done and over with. Keep in mind not to close your eyes as soon as you apply the fake lashes.

Step 5: Finish off the look with eyeliner

The last step is to apply another eyeliner line to hide the lash strip where it meets your eyelids completely. Adding another layer of mascara really gives a finished and natural look. Draw the line from where the strip begins, all the way towards the inner corner of your eye.

And you’re done!

The Do’s of applying fake lashes

Experiment with different lash styles

As with any type of makeup, the key to finding the perfect kind of lashes for yourself is experimenting. Align the different types against your eyes (without the glue, of course) and open your eyes. Although it’s not the perfect visualization, it can still give you an idea of whether or not it suits your eye shape.

Pay attention to the width of the band

This is a lesser-known tip - when looking for new fake lashes, make sure you get a thinner band; the thicker the band, the easier it will lift up and mess up your look. If you are purchasing some with a thicker band, make sure you apply extra glue so that the lash doesn’t lift up.

Use eyeliner as a guide

As discussed before, adhere to your lash line. Alternatively, you can draw a line with a black pencil along your lash line. This will give you an idea of where exactly you need to press down the fake lashes.

Note the color

Dark glue is more likely to blend with your eyeliner. You won’t need to apply anything extra to make it look more natural. However, that is not to say that the white glue doesn’t work perfectly well - once it dries up, it’ll be completely clear, so there is no need to worry!

The Dont’s of applying fake lashes

Don’t glue your eyelids shut

This seems like common sense, but more often than not, people blink as soon as they apply their lashes, leading to shut eyelids (not permanently, though!). Once you press down your fake lashes, make sure you keep your eyes open for a few seconds, so the glue dries up.

Don’t apply the lashes before other eye makeup

Adding the eyelashes should always come after eyeshadow and eyeliner. If you apply the fake lashes first, the eyeshadow will end up falling on top of the lashes. So, keep the lashes as the last step to complete your look.

Don’t leave the excess on

Don’t forget to trim your lashes. If you leave the excess on, chances are your eyelids will just be overwhelmed and tired. Make sure to trim the excess part before applying - if you attempt to do this after you’ve used them, you might end up cutting your natural eyelashes off too!

Just keep these steps and tips in mind as you experiment and apply, and you’ll become an expert at applying fake lashes before you know it. Make sure you don’t rush the process. The key to perfecting this skill is patience. Remember, practice makes perfect!
