How to Make Your Own Body Scrub at Home- Self Care Day!

Not many people are aware of this, but you don’t need to invest in fancy and expensive products to exfoliate your skin properly. Exfoliation is essentially done to keep your skin refreshed, and healthy, and homemade body scrubs work perfectly for it! Not only is it much cheaper and organic, but you also get the satisfaction of making something all on your own.

Body scrubs: Some basics

Why should you use body scrubs?

As mentioned earlier, body scrubs are perfect for exfoliating. A body scrub basically removes the topmost layer of dead skin cells, so your skin ends up looking much more clear and radiant than usual.

Exfoliation does not just help you relieve some stress, but it also helps other products work their magic! Exfoliating before moisturizing let the lotion or cream reach your skin more deeply rather than just acting as another coating.

When should you use body scrubs?

Body scrubs shouldn’t be used every single day - if you over-exfoliate, your skin will start drying out, and you’ll be more prone to skin irritation. The safest frequency is to use a body scrub every other day, or twice a week, applying as you shower.

An exception to this rule could be if you have too sensitive skin - in that case, it’s safer to talk to a dermatologist.

The basic materials

Although every body scrub recipe has some slight variations, a majority of the ingredients remain consistent. Here’s what you need:

  • Brown or white sugar

  • Sea salt

  • Coffee grounds

  • Oil

  • A mixing bowl

  • A spoon for mixing

  • Containers for the body scrub

Body Scrub Recipes

#1: Coffee Body Scrub

Coffee is undoubtedly the go-to ingredient for homemade body scrubs. Not only does it leave you smelling amazing, but the small grains also aid in removing dead cells.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup coffee grounds

  • 1 tbsp. warm coconut oil

  • 2 tbsp. hot water

Directions:

  1. Add coffee and hot water to a bowl and mix them with a spoon.

  2. Once they are fully incorporated, add coconut oil.

  3. If needed, add more coffee grounds to achieve your desired consistency.

  4. When the mixture is cooled, store it in a container.

#2: Coconut Sugar Oatmeal Body Scrub

The combination of oatmeal and coconut acts as a natural moisturizer. This body scrub is perfect for people who suffer from dry or cracked skin. This recipe is for a single-use - oats don’t last too long before turning soft!

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 tbsp. coconut oil (room temperature)

  • ½ cup white or brown sugar

  • ¼ cup raw oats

Directions:

  1. Melt coconut oil into a mixing bowl, and add the sugar.

  2. Stir in the oats.

  3. Mix until the desired consistency is reached.

Tip: use the scrub before the oats become too soft.

#3: Brown Sugar Scrub

Brown sugar is not just affordable, but it is a more gentle ingredient than most. Because of that, it’s perfect to use on sensitive skin. If your skin feels sticky after exfoliating, make sure you rinse for a bit longer.

Ingredients:

  • ½ coconut oil (alternatives: jojoba, olive, almond)

  • ½ brown sugar

Directions:

  1. Add brown sugar and oil into a mixing bowl, and mix thoroughly.

  2. Adjust the sugar or oil according to the consistency you want.

  3. Spoon it into a container

Tip: for an extra touch, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil as well!

#4: Matcha Green Tea Body Scrub

Matcha green tea seems to have taken over the internet and not without reason! Matcha contains a lot of antioxidants, which help lessen the damage from the sun’s UV rays. Green tea also aids in reducing redness in the skin, so it’s perfect for acne-prone skin!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 tsp. matcha green tea powder

  • 1 tsp. plain green tea leaves

  • 2 tbsp. jojoba oil

Directions:

  1. Mix the sugar, matcha, and tea leaves in a single bowl.

  2. When thoroughly incorporated, start adding jojoba oil little by little until you reach the consistency you want.

Tip: if you don’t have jojoba oil on hand, you always use your favorite oil!

#5: Green Tea Sugar Scrub

As discussed earlier, green tea contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. If you don’t have matcha powder, here is an alternative recipe to follow.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup hot water

  • ¼ cup melted coconut oil

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 2 teabags of green tea

Directions:

  1. Boil water, and add the tea bags after killing the heat. Keep the tea bags submerged until the water cools down.

  2. As it cools down, combine brown sugar, coconut oil, and sugar into a single bowl.

  3. Mix thoroughly.

  4. Once the tea has completely cooled down, add it to the sugar mixture.

  5. Add coconut oil if the scrub is too crumbly. Alternatively, if the mixture is too soggy, add a bit more brown sugar.

Tip: make sure the tea is cold because hot water can make the sugar dissolve completely.

#6: Sea Salt Scrub

Research has shown time and again that salt has antibacterial properties. Using it in a body scrub helps with various skin conditions. Most importantly, salt is a natural preservative, so you don’t need to worry about using the scrub too quickly.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup ground sea salt

  • ½ cup coconut oil (or any oil of your choice)

Directions:

  1. Mix the sea salt and oil into a bowl.

  2. As you mix it, adjust the quantity of the oil or sugar.

  3. Optionally, you can add a drop or two of your favorite essential oil as well.

Additional tips

If you add essential oils to the scrub, make sure you test it out first on your skin. If this initial test shows that you’re not allergic to the oil, it should be safe to add it to the scrub as well.

Keep in mind that these recipes are exclusive to be used on your body, not your face. Because the skin on your face is much more sensitive than that on your body, you need to be extra careful when applying anything on it.
